Drinks with Abbey is a short, slice-of-life visual novel portraying a more realistic first date in western culture, from a male's perspective. After connecting with Abbey on a dating app, you meet in person for the first time at a local bar. Through many choices of what to say and do, you determine how the date goes - and how well it ends.
A short, but immersive experience
This glimpse of a date takes place in one large room of a bar and will last around 15-30 minutes, with better choices leading to more content. This comes with obvious limitations, but my main goal was to create a more immersive, realistic atmosphere than is traditional of visual novels - through the art style, music choice and treatment, and nuanced banter. And as it is my first game, I needed a manageable project while also demonstrating my capabilities.
Although the game is short, there is replay value, and for those who wish to figure out the 'perfect' set of choices, that is in fact the only way to get one particular ending.
Drinks with Abbey has lots of choices that impact the game in different and realistic ways. Not every choice you make sends you on a completely unique path (nor do most choices in real life), but they do impact conversation, Abbey's interest in you, future choice options, and ultimately, how the date ends.
To ensure that choices matter, I've also intentionally removed the ability to save or roll back. It's a short game, so saving isn't necessary like it would be for a longer one. But, I especially don't believe in the ability to take back choices, because in my opinion, that makes them meaningless.
