One of the most reliable and arguably most successful heavy freight haulers on the North American rail network, the EMD SD60M, comes to Train Simulator. The SD60 series was intended to improve upon its predecessor, the SD50, and production was spurred by General Motors’ introduction of 3,600 horsepower diesel locomotives. GM’s Electro-Motive Division initially introduced the SD50, but weaknesses in its reliability and construction soon saw the SD60 introduced to service. Intended for heavy duty and medium speed freight traffic, more than 1,100 SD60 models were built between 1984 and 1995. The SD60 proved to be more reliable and more fuel efficient than the SD50, and several variants were produced with different features, including the SD60F (built for Canadian Pacific), SD60I (alternative interior cab), SD60MAC (featuring alternating current traction motors) and the SD60E (a custom rebuild for Norfolk Southern). The most successful variant of the Series was the SD60M, which featured the North American safety cab design and had a full-width short hood. Early models featured three-piece windshield (as featured in this Train Simulator model), although later production models used two windshield panes that were sloped back. Testament to the reliability and sound construction of the SD60 Series, many units are being re-manufactured to extend their service life for a number of Class 1 railroads across North America. The EMD SD60M for Train Simulator is available in Union Pacific livery and features cab and instrument lighting, opening windows and opening cab doors. The locomotive is also Quick Drive compatible, giving you the freedom to drive the Union Pacific SD60M on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam.
